Generals Drop Seventh Straight

Nov. 09, 2018

The Moose Jaw Generals have fallen into a funk and they can't seem to fight their way out.

The Generals lost their seventh consecutive game on Thursday night, blowing a one-goal third-period lead and losing 3-2 in a shootout to the Notre Dame Argos at Mosaic Place.

"We look like we've just forgotten everything over the last three games, it's like starting right over again, I don't know what happened, but we just can't seem to figure it out," said Generals head coach Ray Wareham. "We're in a bad funk right now and it's a tough one."

The loss drops Moose Jaw's record to 6-8-1-1 this season.

Captain Brendan Kemp said that the Generals need to find something to snap them out of their skid, "It's important that we just stay positive, keeps these efforts like we had tonight and hopefully bounces will start going our way and we can get a [win]," he said.

"It's just a matter of a couple of bounces going our way and we've just got to be sure to stay positive in the room, not get down on ourselves and just keep moving forward."

After an emotional start to the game with Evan Thomas' jersey retirement ceremony, the Generals came flying out of the gates with Kemp scoring just 2:15 into the game.

Moose Jaw extended their lead to 2-0 on a Jake Palmer goal 3:25 into the second period, but the Argos were able to gain some momentum with a power play goal from Shane Collins late in the second.

The Generals took back-to-back penalties in the opening minute of the third period and the Argos made them pay with Collins picking up his second of the game, on the power play, with just 1:40 gone in the third.

Notre Dame controlled the rest of the period and after neither team could break through in the three-on-three overtime, the game went to a shootout. Noah Altwasser and Kevin Anderson scored on both attempts for the Argos, while goalie Ruben Cooper turned away Casey McDonald and Cody Davis to secure the win.

"Again two power-play goals against, it’s tough, we have trouble scoring, we know we can't give up much and to take those penalties is just unnecessary, but hopefully it's a learning experience," said Wareham.

Generals goalie Jaxson Taupert made 36 saves in the loss, while Moose Jaw was outshot, 39-32, overall in the game.

The Generals will need to regroup quickly as they face a tough test with the Regina Pat Canadians coming to Mosaic Place on Saturday. Moose Jaw travels to Saskatoon to take on the Contacts on Sunday.
